        Welcome to the Queensryche FAQ.  The purpose of this FAQ is to
        provide some basic (and sometimes not-so-basic) information about
        the band, so that new readers won't have to ask questions that
        have already been answered many times.  The posting schedule is
    something like every 30 days - basically, once a month.  FTP from
    glia.biostr.washington.edu, /pub/queensryche/FAQ.

        Much of the information comes from back issues of the Queensryche
        net-digest, "Screaming in Digital."  Many thanks to the readers
        who contributed this information to the digest.  Thanks also to
        Joyce Filmer, Vinnie Vera, John Sutton-Smith, Metal Sushi, and
        everyone else who's been of help at the Queensryche fanclub and

    Queensryche
                Queensryche is a band, from Seattle, Washington.  The
                music created by Queensryche is commonly referred to as
                progressive metal.

        What's new in this revision of the FAQ
                Update of information regarding the new album.
        Correction of information regarding LaserDiscs.

        The new album and other news
                To know when new albums are coming out, subscribe to the
                net-digest and read it on a regular basis.  New releases
                are always a hot topic, usually for months ahead of time,
                and as soon as they're out, scores of reviews are
                contributed.

        The band have written quite a few songs for their next
        album over the past year or so, and will be entering the
        studio in very early 1994.  Most of the production work
        on this album is expected to be done by the band, though
        Peter Collins may help in an executive production role.
        The album is expected in July or August of 1994, and is
        rumored to be very diverse, including both harder and
        more ethereal material than has been previously released.

        Scott Rockenfield played drums for a few songs on the
        David Lanz/Paul Speer album "Bridge of Dreams" which was
        released in early fall of 1993 by Narada.

        "Building Empires" was released on laserdisc by Pioneer
        in early September, 1993.  Pioneer's laserdisc club can
        be reached at 1-800-322-2285.

        Where to get the latest revision of the FAQ
                The latest revision of this FAQ is always available for
                FTP from glia.biostr.washington.edu (128.95.10.115) in

        Why there are margins on the FAQ and the net-digest
                The net-digest and FAQ are both hand-formatted with
                margins, since readers may wish to print copies and
                staple them or punch them for binders.

        ________                  _Beginnings_                   ________

        The members
                Queensryche's five members all hail from the Seattle area
                and were involved in local bands, before coming together
                in a band called The Mob and recording a 4-song EP.  The
                members are, in birth order:
                        Geoff Tate - Vocals - Jan 14, 1959
                        Eddie Jackson - Bass - Jan 29, 1960
                        Michael Wilton - Guitar - Feb 23, 1962
                        Chris DeGarmo - Guitar - Jun 14, 1963
                        Scott Rockenfield - Drums - Jun 15, 1963

        The name
                The Mob's EP got the attention of Kim and Diana Harris,
                record-shop owners on the east side of Seattle, who began
                managing the band and encouraged them to change their
                name.  The title of the first song on the EP, Queen of
                the Reich, was contracted to Queensreich, then altered to
                Queensryche, so as not to imply nazi sentiments.  The EP
                was also given the title Queensryche.

        The symbol
                Queensryche's symbol, known as a tri-ryche (sometimes
                spelled try-ryche), has no particular meaning, and is
                just something the band thought looked neat at the time.
                Through subsequent releases it has evolved, but the basic
                shape remains the same.

        ________                    _Releases_                   ________

        Queensryche
                In 1983, the initial 3,500 copies of this four-song 206
                Records EP sold out before the band had played a live
                show.  EMI reissued the EP when they signed the band, and
                in 1986 a fifth song, Prophecy, was added.

        The Warning
                Queensryche's first full-length work, this album was
                recorded at Abbey Road studios.  Released in 1984,
                it is generally viewed as a semi-conceptual comment on
                the current and future state of the world

        Live In Tokyo
                This concert video, now out of print in the USA, was
                recorded during a brief headlining tour in Japan just
                before the release of The Warning, and was released in
                1985.

        Rage For Order
                This 1986 album dealing with three tiers of order -
                personal, political, and technological - was not a big
                commercial success, but is the favorite of many longtime
                fans.

        Operation: Mindcrime
                This 1988 concept album introduced a small cast of vivid
                characters, participants in a storyline involving drugs,
                politics, religion, drugs, sex, and assassination, all
                set to music.

        Video: Mindcrime
                This conceptual video was released in 1989, and features
                videos for a half-dozen songs from Operation: Mindcrime,
                including a "hidden" video with clues to the storyline.

        Empire
                A good bit more upbeat than Operation: Mindcrime, this
                1990 album nonetheless dealt with several contemporary
                issues.  The album went gold in one week, and spawned
                several singles.

        Operation: Livecrime
                This boxed set featuring a complete life performance of
                Operation: Mindcrime on both CD and video was released
                in late 1991, as Queensryche prepared to finish touring
                in support of Empire.

        Building Empires
                This 100-minute retrospective video, featuring rare and
                unreleased conceptual videos and live footage from the
                Building Empires tour and television appearances.

                The net-digest, "Screaming in Digital," is essentially a
                free weekly fan magazine in electronic text form.  Common
                subjects include anything and everything implicitly or
                explicitly related to Queensryche.

        ________                _Digest_Tidbits_                 ________

        Digest guidelines
                If you're contributing to the digest, try to use correct
                spelling and grammar, and go easy on the flames.  If any
                of these really aren't practical for you, contribute
                anyway, the editor can fix anything that's incorrect.
                Since this is handled by a human, it's entirely okay to
                have a lengthy signature file or send "test" messages,
                they'll just get edited out.  One thing to keep in mind
                is that it's a weekly digest, and thus not a very fast
                way of communicating crucial information.

        The old list
                A year or so before "Screaming in Digital" came along,
                there was, for a short time, a Queensryche list called
                "Breaking the Silence."  Very little information from
                it still survives, aside from a history of the band.

        Abbreviations
                Some of Queensryche's releases are called by shortened
                forms of their titles.  The Warning may be referred to
                as Warning, Rage For Order as Rage, Operation: Mindcrime
                and Operation: Livecrime as Mindcrime and Livecrime,
                respectively.  Initial abbreviations such as RFO and O:M
                are less widely accepted.

        T-shirts
                A run of Screaming in Digital t-shirts were designed and
                offered for purchase by subscribers in early 1993.  All
                the shirts were pre-ordered, so no extras are available.
                However, if there is sufficient interest in the future,
                more might be made.

        Song lyrics
                You can FTP lyrics to all the songs from all Queensryche
                albums (and the ones they've contributed to movie
                soundtracks, or used as b-sides on singles) from
                glia.biostr.washington.edu /pub/queensryche/files/lyrics,
                or use FTP or Gopher to retrieve them from ftp.uwp.edu,
                in /pub/music/lists/queensryche/lyrics.  Lyrics are also
                available from the Fanclub.

        Discographies
                Discographical information covering full-length releases,
                singles, magazine articles, and bootlegs is available on
                glia.biostr.washington.edu, in the directory
                /pub/queensryche/files/discography for FTP, and can be
                retrieved through FTP or Gopher from ftp.uwp.edu,
                /pub/music/lists/queensryche/discography.  This
                information is extensive but still incomplete.

        ________                  _Sheet_Music_                  ________

        Operation: Mindcrime
                A sheet music and guitar tablature book of selections
                from Operation: Mindcrime is commercially available.
                Transcriptions of several of the individual songs have
                also appeared in guitar magazines.

        Empire
                A sheet music and guitar tablature book of selections
                from Empire is commercially available, as is individual
                sheet music and tablature for Silent Lucidity.

        ________                    _Bootlegs_                   ________

        What they are
                Bootlegs are unauthorized recordings of a band.  Yes,
                they're illegal.  Most of them have titles related to the
                band, a photo on the cover, whatever.  They're usually
                live, of course, taped from concerts or live broadcasts.
                The sound quality varies greatly based on the recording
                technology used, the situation, and how many times the
                recording is copied before it reaches you.

    How many there are
                There are dozens of bootlegs of Queensryche, ranging back
                to the early days of the band.  Some are in the vinyl LP
                format, some are in the CD format, some are videotapes.
                As mentioned above, the discographical information which
                is available for FTP includes a list of bootlegs.  Note:
                this list is purely for reference purposes, and does not
                contain information on prices, availability, or quality.
                The digest owner has no bootlegs.

    Where to get them
                Since bootlegs are illegal, they can only rarely be found
                in record stores.  Record shows and sales tend to have
                more of them, and specialty magazines and mail-order
                companies are the most likely to have them.  Sometimes
                bootlegs are offered for sale by digest subscribers.

        Cost
                Bootlegs aren't cheap - they usually cost at least as
                much as import releases.  If you're not a stickler for
                quality, though, there are people who'll trade you a tape
                copy of a bootleg, for a tape copy of another bootleg, or
                in some cases, another group altogether.

        The Whisper
                Quite a bit at the end, including a clip of a female
                shouting "Kill us all, kill us all!" taken from the movie
                "Helter Skelter."

        Neue Regel
                Quite a bit spoken behind the music, ending in repetition
                of, "It's all related."

        Chemical Youth
                Repeated, "I cannot help but get angry at times," at the
                beginning of the song, then in the middle of the song,
                "I used to wonder if there was something I could do with
                my life that would really make a difference.  Heh... you
                can't change the world..."  The voice continues behind
                the music for some time.

        Screaming in Digital
                At the beginning of the song, "It occurs to me that I
                might not grow old," from the left, then "If you want to
                say goodbye, just say I love you," from the right.

        I Remember Now                            ]
                Over the hospital public address system, "Doctor Davis,
                telephone please, Doctor Davis, telephone please.  Doctor
                Blair, Doctor Blair, Doctor J. Hamilton."
                TV, "...the Soviets...  In other news the bizarre murders
                of political and religious leaders that have shocked this
                city over the last month seemed to have ended as suddenly
                as they began.  No terrorist groups ...  responsibility
                for the slayings, but police have a suspect in custody
                under observation in a state hospital.  His identity is
                being withheld pending further investigation.  Sports and
                weather next..."
                Debbie, "It's ten minutes past curfew, why are you still
                up?  Hello?  Hello?  Perhaps you need another shot.

        Anarchy-X

                Michael Kamen - known for his movie music - arranged
                orchestration for The Warning, Operation: Mindcrime,
